In Arabic, N'Djamena means a place of rest and founded in the early twentieth century, it is indeed one of the most peaceful cities. Although on your visit to this place you may see bullet holes in buildings, which would remind you of Chad’s troubled time. Earlier it had a peaceful entity which was lost during the wars. However, gradually it is returning to its former glory.
Citizens of the city are considered to be one of the best and the friendliest people in Africa. They are industrious too, and that is reflected in the rapid growth of urban areas and intensive modernisation. Today, its not only the capital but N’Djamena is a real political, economic and cultural hub of the country. It has evolved to be one of the liveliest city of Central Africa.
Location and Climate of N'Djamena
N’Djamena stands at the confluence of River Chari and Logone, where they flow to Lake Chad and form the Chad- Cameroon border.
N’Djamena has a tropical climate, experiencing high temperatures throughout the year. Being situated near the Equator, it has daylight for 11-13 hours a day, throughout the year. Although separate seasons can be marked well, the features here are high temperature and heavy rainfall during rainy seasons.
Winters are more suitable for tourists for cool climate and no precipitation. The nights are cooler and visitors can enjoy the atmosphere then. During July to September, due to mud and flooding, it is not possible for visitors to visit places.
N'Djamena culture
N'Djamena can be distinguished into two arts. The first representing the ‘European” area and the second one the ‘African’ area.
The city is divided into two parts: a small 'European' area and much larger and more lively 'African' part. Each of which follow their own style of living and architecture. One part follow quite night life and the others have lively bars and discos to enjoy night.
Tourist attractions in N’Djamena
When visiting this city, your eyes may be attracted to the bullet holes in buildings, which will remind you of the tough time faced by Chad. A must visit while in this place is its National Museum, where you can find a collection of the Sarh Culture during the 9th century. Although many artifacts are looted during the civil war, yet the remnants are also quite interesting.
If interested in marketing, you must visit the local market, especially the Grand Marche market. You can pick up colourful Chadian rugs and jewellery from the market.
Apart from this being mostly populated by Muslim citizens there are many mosques which will be quite interesting to visit too. Visiting the Great Mosque, which towers over the neighbourhood is a must. Walking towards south of Grand Mosque, you will find Hippodrome and a modern golf club.
Reaching N’Djamena
N’Djamena has an international airport, which connects Chad with other countries like Paris and Istanbul, and part of the cities of Africa. It has no rail network and hence depends on the roadways for its connectivity. A trip on Boat on River Chari can be a lifetime’s experience for you.
