Guinea
Guinea | Map Guinea
Guinea’s hallmark is political stability otherwise a rarity
in the most of the African nations. This country in western Africa
has only two presidents since it attained its independence from France
in 1958. Sekou Toure was inaugurated as the first president of independent
Guinea. After his death in 1984 a military coup established Lansana
Conte as the President. However, democratic elections were held in
1993 which returned Gen. Conte victorious. He was again elected in
the subsequent elections in 1998 and in 2003. Guinea has remained
immune to the conflicts which plagued the neighbouring countries including
Sierra Leone and Liberia.
Travel Overview
Though a very poor country, Guinea is an enticing destination due
to its scenic landscape, whose diversity ranges from high mountains
in the Guinea Highlands to mangrove swamps, and from tropical rainforests
to the savannah grasslands of the Sahel region. Fouta Djalon Highlands
is Guinea's nicest area, with its lush green hills and typical Fula
tribal population. The capital city of Conakry, situated on the scenic
island of Tumbo, offers relaxing moments.
There are a couple excellent beaches including Cape Verga Beaches.
Other places of tourist attraction are the wonderful waterfall of
Les Chutes de Kinkon, Kakimbon Caves and Mt Nimba. For adventure enthusiasts
Guinea offers activities like nature trekking, hiking and swimming.
