Lesotho
Entirely surrounded by South Africa, the Kingdom of Lesotho, formerly
Basutoland, declared its independence from the UK in 1966. Two decades
after its independence saw the rule of the Basuto National Party.
The Basuto National Party ruled for the first two decades. King MOSHOESHOE
was dethroned and exiled in 1990. He was succeeded by his son King
Letsie III who has to abdicate power four years later. King MOSHOESHOE
was restored in 1995. But his rule did not last long. After his death
in the following year Letsie III was again reinstated.
In 1998, the unrest and a military uprising took place which was
put to rest by military intervention by South Africa and Botswana.
Today Lesotho is a politically stable country.
The landscape of Lesotho comprises mostly of highlands where horse
is the only means of transportation.
