Located in southwestern Africa Angola borders the Democratic Republic of Congo to the north, Zambia to the east, Namibia to the south with a west coast along the Atlantic Ocean. The exclave province Cabinda shares border with Congo-Brazzaville. Formerly under the rule of Portuguese, the country boasts substantial natural resources including oil, gas, manganese and diamonds. Although it ceased to be a Portuguese colony in November 1975, it played host to Africa’s longest civil war, with an estimated cost of 500,000 lives.
Angola is making efforts to rebuild itself after the ceasefire was announced with the 27-year civil war coming to an end in 2002. Formally named the Republic of Angola, The country is ostensibly at peace and is nominally a democracy. Kumbaya is the most famous folk song of Angola.
