Burundi
Capital: Bujumbura
Burundi | Flag Burundi | Political map Burundi
The capital city of Burundi is Bujumbura which was originally known as Usumbura till the early sixties of the 20th Century. Commonly called as ‘Buj’ by the local foreigners, Bujumbura is located at the north east corner of Lake Tanganyika and is one of the major ports of the country. While the city is not very developed, yet it has an International Airport that is the only gateway for international travelers to enter into the city.
Climate of Bujumbura
October to April in Bujumbura is characterized by the wet season wherein the temperature varies from 28o – 30o C during the day and hovers around 20oC during the night time. The rest of the year the city experiences dry season without much variation in the day and night temperature, as compared to the wet season. Thanks to the altitude of the city, that although it is located near the Equator one will not find much high temperatures any time of the year.
How to get to Bujumbura
The capital city as well as the major port city is connected with the outside world by means of airplanes as well as ferries and buses. There are many international airlines that touch base with Bujumbura and various cities of Africa. Airlines like Kenya Airways, Brussels Airlines, and Ethiopian Airlines are some of the major flight operators that will get one to Bujumbura. The local airline, Burundi Airlines is also available however flight operations of this airline are not very regular.
The ferry service that is available from the ports of Bujumbura serve both as cargo as well as passenger ferries that connect the capital city with Kigoma in Tanzania and Mpulungu in Zambia. Not much international traffic takes the water way though to enter Bujumbura. The third mode of getting to Bujumbura is by bus from countries like DRC, Rwanda and Uganda. There are some bus connections between Kabanga in Tanzania and Bujumbura too.
Places of interest in and around Bujumbura
There are a quite a few interesting spots that will attract tourists of all categories. While the Livingstone-Stanley Monument will attract almost anybody and everybody who knows about the world famous quote of “Dr. Livingstone I presume” (while the quote was made in Tanzania, however as Dr. Livingstone and Stanley had passed through this area, a monument has been raised in their memory and honor), the Rusizi National Park will attract the lover of the wild. While the beaches on the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika will offer picturesque scenery to the nature lovers, the monument of independence will tell the story of the independence of the country from the German and the Belgians in the early sixties.
The city of Bujumbura is somewhat safe during day time and also in night time provided it is not very late. Not much of police patrolling happens round the clock, hence it is wise to be alert while being on the streets and post sunset it is safer to return within the safe shelters of the hotel.
