Moldova

Its history and culture inextricably linked with Romania, Moldova was annexed by the USSR in 1940 following the division of Romania between Hitler's Germany and Stalin's USSR.

The country became an independent republic after the disintegration of Soviet Union. However the territory east of the Dniester River has considerable presence of Russian troops to support the Slavic majority population, mostly Ukrainians and Russians.

The poorest nation in Europe, Moldova became the first former Soviet state to elect a Communist as its president in 2001.

Sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is the poorest nation in Europe. It is also the first former state of USSR to elect a Communist as its president in 2001.

Travel overview
Though a poor nation, Moldova more than lives up to its image of a picturesque country and makes for a relaxed, informal and incredibly friendly place to visit.
The country is a glorious mix of wine and natural splendour. Cricova is the famous wine region of the country. It has some of the finest and rarest wine in the world, particularly considering its low price. The Lower Dniestr National Park is home to some wonderful archaeological sites. The Orheiul Vechi Monastery complex is well worth visit. Overlooks the Raut River, the 13th century Cave Monastery has been carved into a gigantic limestone cliff and attracts tourists in good number.
