A landlocked country, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in
the later half of the 10th century. The history of this small country
is influenced by its far larger neighbours. In 1839, it had to cede
more than half of its territory to Belgium. However it attained full
independence in 1867.
Despite declaring its neutrality, Luxembourg was overrun by Germany
in both World Wars. After the World War II, it joined the Benelux
Customs Union and NATO thereby abandoning its neutrality. The country
also became a founder member of the European Economic Community, a
precursor of the European Union, in 1957. The country enjoys the political
stability.
