A landlocked country in Central Europe, Hungary once formed part
of the famed Austro-Hungarian Empire that came to an end during World
War I. Also known as the Country of the Magyars, it came under Communist
rule after the World War II. In 1956, the country withdrew from the
Warsaw Pact. This resulted in the military intervention by Soviet
Union. Hungry was introduced to the so-called "Goulash Communism"
under the rule of Janos Kadar in 1968. As a result, Hungary economy
began to be liberalized. After the collapse of Communism, first multiparty
elections were held in the country in 1990. Free market economy took
the place of isolationist economy. Hungry became a member of NATO
in 1999 and the EU in 2004.
