Ireland | Where is Ireland | Map Ireland
Located in the Atlantic Ocean, Ireland has its share of troubled
times. Yet the country is known for its charming people and warm hospitality.
Celtic tribes began to settle the island from 600 B.C. it was repeatedly
invaded by Norsemen which was finally ended when King Brian Boru defeated
the Danes in 1014. The English stated invading the territory in the
12th century touching off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish
struggle characterized by violent rebellions and ruthless repressions.
The year 1916 saw a failed Easter Monday Rebellion setting off many
years of guerrilla warfare. This resulted in independence from the
UK for 26 southern counties in 1921. The country withdrew from the
British Commonwealth in 1948. It became a member of the European Community
in 1973. Since then it has emerged as a modern Celtic Tiger economy.
