The largest of the three Baltic republics, Lithuania was an independent state during the period between the two World Wars In 1940 Soviet Union annexed the country. The action attracted condemnation of the US which never recognized the action. Lithuania declared its independence from the USSR, becoming the first Soviet republics to do so.

Lithuania became a NATO member in 2004. Since independence, it began to integrate its economy into the world by embracing market reform.

Vilnius, with its Baroque old town, is a classic historical city in the eastern European. The most architecturally beautiful of the Baltic capitals, the city cast a spell of charm. Cathedral Square is the central hub of the city. Kaunas, the country’s second city, boasts an enticing old town and is known for eclectic museums, along with a wide range of good restaurants and bars.

The seaside resort of Palanga is another top attraction of Lithuania. For those in search of mysticism, the Hill of Crosses, country’s holiest site, is the ideal place.

If you are a wildlife enthusiast, the stretch of Curonian Spit is just the place. Other attractions in Lithuania are the eclectic National Museum and the red-brick Trakai Castle.
