The largest of the three Baltic republics, Lithuania was an independent
state during the period between the two World Wars In 1940 Soviet
Union annexed the country. The action attracted condemnation of the
US which never recognized the action. Lithuania declared its independence
from the USSR, becoming the first Soviet republics to do so.
Lithuania became a NATO member in 2004. Since independence, it began
to integrate its economy into the world by embracing market reform.
