Middle East Introduction

The Middle East region comprises of countries belonging to Western Asia and parts of Northern Africa. A historic part of the world, Middle East, despite its hot and arid weather is a perfect destination to travel. Some parts of Middle East have been termed as sensitive areas, but, the region has always been the center of world affairs from different points of view. Nevertheless, tourism in most of the Middle Eastern countries is popular and worthy. Countries that form a part of Middle East are Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel.

Political Overview
Most of the Middle East countries were politically controlled by the Ottoman Empire, having base in Istanbul, Turkey. In 1798, France invaded Egypt and with this the intervention of European power in Middle East begun. After World War I, the Ottoman Empire was dissected and was handed over to British and French powers. However, some of these countries got their independence from the European powers during 1920s and 30s and rest during 1940s to 70s.

After becoming independent these Middle East countries were ruled by monarchs and dictators. However, two severe problems that most of these countries faced are the economic development and political instability. The reason behind the instability of politics of this region is because of internal conflicts and wars as well as external pressure from World superpowers. All this has lead to the fall of monarchy and the formation of democracy in many Middle East countries since 1990s.

Geographical Overview
The region of Middle East has an extensive and diverse geography that extends from Black Sea towards north to Arabian Sea in the south. The region has many vast deserts such as Sahara Desert, the desert of Arabian Peninsula, and so on. Besides, there are many high mountain ranges found abundantly all through the region. These peaks are as high as 19,000 feet.

The climate of the Middle East region portrays great variety. The desert areas are low in rainfall with an average of about 4 inch per annum and extremely high temperature. However, the areas lying along the coast of Mediterranean sea and Black sea experiences temperature that is relatively low due to the presence of water. The climate of these regions is moderate and nice.

Tourism
As far as tourism in Middle East is concerned, the experience is definitely one of the best in the world. The region is fascinating as it is the birth place of many civilizations and three great religions, namely, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. There are many beautiful and historical monuments and buildings in the region.

Many old and significant cities of the world are situated in the Middle East. For instance, Jerusalem, Cairo, Mecca, Istanbul, Baghdad, Damascus are some truly significant and lovely cities. In addition, you can also see ruins of many historic cities in countries like Egypt among others.

Moreover, the extremely picturesque landscapes of the region are also mesmerizing. You can find sand dunes and deserts along with lakes and mountains as well as can see the varied underwater world in the Middle East region. In addition, the lovely and simple people are also worth seeing.

Top destinations of the Middle East include Esfahan and Persepolis in Iran; Damascus, Palmyra and Aleppo in Syria; Jerusalem, Beirut and Baalbek in Lebanon; Madain Saleh in Saudi Arabia; Petra and Wadi Rum in Jordan; and Dhofar and Sharqiya Region in Oman along with many others.

Culture & People
The culture of Middle East is a great mix of numerous ethnic groups, many of which are ancient. The religion followed in the region is also diverse. In fact, many important religions of the world originated in the Middle East, including Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Of these, Islam is the most practiced religion in the Middle East. In addition, some minority religions are also followed here. The primary languages spoken in the region include Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Berber, and Kurdish along with many minor.

Economy
As far as economies are concerned, Middle East countries range variedly. There are countries in the region, which are underdeveloped and economically deprived. On the other hand, there are others, which are affluent and economically very well off.

Countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Iran are counted as largest economies of the Middle East along with Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, and Cyprus. The Gaza Strip and West Bank, which are the areas of the autonomous Palestinian Authority, are the least developed economies of the Middle East.

Some of these economies are dependent on oil and oil based products, whereas other on diverse activities. Important industries of the region include oil industries, agricultural products, dairy farm, textile, leather and so on. Banking and tourism are also popular sectors of many economies.
