Mexico is a country where prosperity, poverty, natural beauty and
urban blight exist side by side. After ruled by Spain for three centuries, the country attained independence
early in the 19th century. The country’s politics were dominated
by one party system under the auspices of the Institutional Revolutionary
Party, or PRI which ruled the country for 70 years. However, this
monopoly was broken in the elections in 2000 that returned Vicente
Fox of the National Action Party (PAN) as the first president to come
from the opposition. He was succeeded by Felipe Calderon also belonging
to PAN in 2006.
In 1994 Mexico plunged into economic turmoil thanks to a devaluation
of the Peso. After facing the worst recession in half a century, the
country is now making remarkable recovery.
Travel overview
With an indigenous Amerindian heritage and a distinct Spanish flavour,
Mexico comes with a reputation as a unique land packed with natural
splendour and bustling cities. Home to a varied topography ranging
from cactus-studded deserts to white pristine beaches, fast-flowing
rivers and snow-capped volcanoes, the country is also known for its
historical past thanks to its being cradle of Mayan and Aztec civilizations.
The capital Mexico City serves as a base for exploring the country.
While the ancient ruins at Teotihuaan, also called the City of the
Gods, cast a spell of charm, Puebla retains the colonial charm of
