Flying Fish Cove the capital of Christmas Island
Flying Fish Cove or “The Settlement” is the capital city of the small country of Christmas Island which is located in the Indian Ocean and a territory of Australia. With a population of little more than 1500 inhabitants, the Flying Fish Cove has about one third of the total population of the whole of Christmas Island. The city is labeled as “The Settlement” in many maps.
Although the port of Flying Fish Cove is the capital of the Australian territory, it is just a little less than 400 kms from Java and quite far from the Australian port of Perth with the distance between the ports at more than 2500 kms.
Climate of Flying Fish Cove
Characterized by Wet and Dry seasons, the capital of this island country experiences a tropical equatorial climate. December to April is the period where precipitation is the maximum, thanks to the North West monsoons. Once the monsoons are over, the south east trade winds brings about dry weather. Even during the dry seasons, the humidity of the capital city of Flying Fish Cove hovers well above 80%, which is caused by the influence of the oceans. The temperature range of the port city varies from about 22 degrees to 28 degrees all throughout the calendar year with the mercury reaching its peak during the month of April.
Getting to Flying Fish Cove
The capital city is connected to the mainland of Australia by means of airplanes which fly from and to Perth. Getting a visa to Christmas Island is no challenge and hence visiting Flying Fish Cove is just as simple as visiting any other Australian city. There is a chartered flight service between Flying Fish Cove and Jakarta which is a weekly service.
There are yacht and cruises that will take one to the magnificent port of Flying Fish Cove which is the gateway to enter the territory island of Christmas Island.
