A country of striking beauty and lofty peaks, Kyrgyzstan became independent
with the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991. The country became
a part of Soviet Republic when the later annexed it in 1864.
In 2005 nationwide demonstration, touched off by widespread fraud
in parliamentary elections, ousted the former president, Askar Akayev,
from power. He had ruled the Central Asian country since 1990. Kurmanbek
Bakiyev came to power in the presidential elections held in 2005.
Kyrgyzstan is a multi-ethnic society comprising Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Tajiks,
Russians, Ukrainians, Uighur, Dungan and Germans. Sometimes tensions
between the communities are reported in border areas. An ally of the
US in the war against terrorism, Kyrgyzstan allowed the US forces
to use the Manas airport of Bishkek as a base.
