Phnom Penh capital of Cambodia
The southernmost part of the Indochina peninsula in the south-east of Asia has some great spots for tourists and travellers. One among them is Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, a small city at this south-eastern zone of Asian subcontinent. It’s not only the capital, but the largest city of the country, as well as the heart of the nation by being the strongest economical, industrial and cultural power with deep rooted heritage, strong security, and political powers.
The city of Phnom Penh is famous to the tourists for its beautifully structured historical monuments and temples. Situated at the union of the Mekong and Tongle Sap Rivers, the city offers some spectacular natural beauty and views. The river side is the actual heart of the city, as people and tourists flock to this place for a stroll in the morning and evening. As a result, restaurants, cafes and shops of varied items are also crowded and always booming in this part of the city. There are touts and beggars too in the still developing city, where people are still struggling in several parts for the basic commodities.
However the tranquil river side and the serenity of nature amidst the rural backdrop make the place a perfect getaway for nature lovers who fit in just anywhere.
Transport to the city and in and around
The city is very well connected to the rest of the country and the world through several routes. You get an option to travel by air and rail, water, and then by road too. Road network both inside and to get out of the city are excellent. You will get city buses, taxis, motorbike taxis, motorbike rentals, and tuk tuks within the city to travel inside the city, and long distance buses to go out of the city.
The nearest airport is just seven kilometres from the main city. You can reach there by both bus and taxi.
The city is famous for its congested streets and heavy traffic jam, which is why you must be prepared to lose some hours in street by standing in jams, and may also have to give penalty of a few dollars when in the street.
Tourism in Phnom Penh
There are lots of activities for the tourists in Phnom Penh. Lots of heritage filled historical monuments which are all important, and temples, malls and parks, everything for the varied taste of different tourists are there in the city.
The Royal Palace with its two famous pagodas, The National Museum of Cambodia featuring lots of arts from the Angkor’s prime days, the Phnom temple also known as Wat Phnom, the riverside walk also known as Sisowath Quay, the Tuol Sleng Genocide museum, the Killing Fields of Choeung are all in the list of the must see places of Phnom Penh, and you must believe that there is much more to it.
With so many places to see, your tour in Phnom Penh should never be too short. You must complete most important sites in and around the city including the must visit famous Angkor Wat, which is a world famous Buddhist temple.
