With the nickname of “Ouaga”, Ouguadougou is the capital city of the landlocked country of Burkina Faso in the western part of Africa. Located on the Central Plateau, the city is situated in the central part of the country. Apart from being political capital of the country, Ouagadougou is cultural, economic centre of the country as well. It has the history of being the administrative centre during the colonial rule as well.
Climate of Ouagadougou
With hot semi Arid climate the city receives a little less than 800mm of rainfall on an annual basis. From June to September the sun takes a holiday from the city as these are months with maximum precipitation with rainfall of as more than 150mm in a month on an average. The winters are very short lived in the city of Ouagadougou with only the months of December and January giving some relief to the Burkinabes. Even in these months the average temperature drops to a minimum of 16o C only.
The rest of the year, the temperature varies from around 32o C to as high as high as 40 o C with the mercury touching 48 o C at times during the extreme hot months of May and June. Other characteristics of the climate would be the dry Harmattan winds which are actually northeasterly winds that blow from the Sahara desert into the land bringing about drop in humidity to less than 20% thereby causing lot of health hazards.
How to get in the city
The city of Ouagadougou is connected by air with other African and some of the international cities of Europe and Asia. Major flight operators are Air Burkina, Air France (connects the city directly to Paris), Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airways (connects Ouagadougou to Addis Ababa) and many other airlines.
There are bus connections from adjoining African countries that allow entry into the capital city of Ouagadougou. Countries which are connected by bus ways are Niger, Ghana, Benin, Togo, and Mali.
Places to visit in Ouagadougou
As a tourist spot, Ouagadougou has a lot to offer to its tourists. The first tourist attraction is the National Museum which was built in the early sixties and currently serves as a manifestation stage of the various tribes and cultures of the country. The museum also hosts a library which contains many sacred testimonials speaking about the traditional and culture of the country.
Another major tourist spot in the city of Ouagadougou is the Park of Bangr Weogo which is the home for more than hundred and a fifty varieties of bird and a lot many species of animals which includes squirrels, antelopes, crocodiles, just to name a few. Some other important areas of interests are the Laongo, the site with granite slabs, Musee de Manega that’s exhibits local musical instruments, and the Garden of Ouaga-Loudun friendship, which is a symbol of the friendly relationship between the cities of Ouagadougou and Loudun in France.
There are a couple of festivals that happen every couple of years which are the International Saloon of Crafts and Arts and the Festival of Cinema. These festivals attract a lot of tourists for the couple of weeks during which the festivals run.
